"To enable young people to develop through music across all
boundaries."
(Mission Statement Jeunesses Musicales
International)
In 1945, two months after the end of WWII, the Jeunesse
Musicales International (JMI) was founded by Marcel Cuvelier
from Belgium and René Nicoly from France. Their aim was to
promote peace and friendship between young people of different
nations through music.
Sections of the Jeunesse Musicales have been founded in all
parts of the world since then. At present the JMI is active in
more than 40 countries. Around 36 000 music related activities
for young people are organised every year. According to UNESCO,
JMI is the biggest international youth-culture-organisation.
Two of the most important joint projects of the JMI are the
Jeunesse Musicales World Orchestra, which has been appointed
“UNESCO Artist for Peace”, and the World Youth Choir. Similarly
unique is also the “Music Crossroads Project” in Africa which
has given social stability and a new chance in life to thousands
of young African people.
A few facts from JMI’s Annual Report 2004:
- 30,000: number of events organized each year (concerts,
festivals, workshops, competitions, discussion groups and
orchestra and choir projects)
- 3.5 million: number of people who attend Jeunesses
Musicales events each year
- in more than 3,000 cities
